>• The 43-year-old cocreator of FOX's new Family Guy animated spin-off The Cleveland Show discovered his swaggering-yet-sweet-voiced muse at a pick-up basketball game.

YOU DON'T LOOK A THING LIKE CLEVELAND. ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED TO MEET YOU?

Yes, many are surprised that I am white. Especially African-American people. I take it as a compliment, an affirmation that I'm playing a real character and not a stereotype.

DO YOUR KIDS KNOW YOU VOICE CLEVELAND?

My daughter Josie is 2. When I'm working on an episode at home and she hears the voice, she runs in, looks at me and looks at the TV. My son Jack is 5, and he knows I play pretend.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO DO CARTOONS?

No, I was not a big animation fan growing up. I just knew I wanted to be funny!

ARE YOU AND CLEVELAND ALIKE AT ALL?

He's from Virginia, he's well-intended, he's kind of wacky, will say random things, and all those things are true of me.
