The Oscar-winning actress, 34, has signed on to star in Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment of the futuristic Mad Max series, Variety reports. Shooting will begin next August in Australia.
This follows Theron's starring role in The Road, an adventure film opening next month based on the Cormac McCarthy novel set in a similar dusty dystopia. Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress for 2003's Monster.
Mel Gibson played the title character Max Rockatansky in the three previous Mad Max films, but is not returning for the one, according to the Hollywood Reporter. British actor Tom Hardy will take over the role.
The original Mad Max (1979) helped make a star of Gibson, who was then in his early 20s. It was followed by Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985).
But how about a Mad Maxine?
