Picks and Pans Review: Darius Rucker Soundtrack of My Life
>The Hootie & the Blowfish frontman, 43—now a hot country star up for two CMAs Nov. 11—reveals his musical inspirations.
MY WEDDING SONG
"Happier Than the Morning Sun," Stevie Wonder
I sang it with Edwin McCain. It was just my beautiful barefoot bride [his wife of eight years, Beth], the band and some family. I got through the song, but I cried.
MY FAVORITE SONG TO SING AS A KID
"For the Good Times," Al Green
I would sit there with my little salt shaker, my mother's friends would be there, and I'd sing it. At some point in the day my mom was going to put on an Al Green record.
SONG THAT MAKES ME CRY
"I Can't Make You Love Me," Bonnie Raitt
That song does it for me every time. Wow, I'm tearing up right now! If somebody broke up with you and you listen to that song, you can just let it all out.
MY KIDS' FAVORITE SONG
"She's Country," Jason Aldean
When it comes on the radio, I turn it up just to watch Jack (behind Rucker) sing it. Cary (far left) can't get enough of Rascal Flatts, and Dani loves Taylor Swift.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today," George Jones
I just [discovered] this. I wasn't feeling too cool on the bus one day and listened to that song 10 times in a row. I was like, "How did I miss this?"
FAVORITE ROMANTIC MUSIC
Rapture, Anita Baker
That is the date-night album. Her voice, the songs—that will always be the greatest album for romance. But the greatest love song of all time is "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins.
FAVORITE COUNTRY ALBUM
Del Rio, TX? 1959, Radney Foster
It's the best country record I've ever heard. When I'm singing rock, I'm trying to be Michael Stipe. R&B? Al Green. And with country, I'm trying to be Radney Foster.
