Lack of Privacy Was Hardest for Chaz Bono

Of all the many issues that he had to deal with during his sex change, having to do it in the public eye was among the hardest, Chaz Bono says on Good Morning America.

"I think probably the first thing that was an incredible hurdle was that I wasn't going to be able to do this privately like most people, and that took a really long time to get over," he says.

But the longtime gay-rights activist says that it doesn't change his feelings about being a spokesman for the movement.

"If by being public about it other people can see this and not have to struggle about it, I'm really happy about that," he says. "I've been an activist in the LGBT community for a long time. I think noting's changed, I'm just a little bit more focused on the 'T' now than I was on the 'L' or the 'G.' "

And now that he's faced those fears of going through his change publicly?

"I needed to work through the things that scared me in order to start this journey. At this point, nothing scares me," he said.

"Life is just great now, just really great."
