In her statement, Jenny Sanford said her decision to end the marriage "came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation, yet I am still dedicated to keeping the process that lies ahead peaceful for our family," reports South Carolina's Greenville News.
Her announcement also came a day after Mark Sanford was quoted as saying, "There are hopes to reconcile," and the same week as a legislative panel rebuked the governor for his conduct.
In August, Jenny – a former Wall Street executive who helped launch her husband's political career – and the couple's four sons moved out of the Governor's Mansion and into the family home on Sullivan's Island.
"I remain thankful to so many across this state and nation for their words of encouragement and prayers during this difficult time," Sanford's statement said. "Please know the boys and I are doing well and are blessed with the incredible support of friends and family and bolstered by our faith and the unfailing love of our God above."
