Contrary to media reports, Gary Coleman was arrested for a failure to appear in court – not for domestic assault, according to his attorney as well as a police statement.

"This is a lot less serious than it seems," the actor's lawyer Randy Kester tells PEOPLE. "He was not arrested for assault." However, Kester was unsure what case the failure to appear stemmed from.

A Santaquin City, Utah, police statement confirms that no criminal charges have been filed against the actor, however they did respond to his home Sunday for an unnamed "civil disturbance."

"During the course of the investigation, a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear was located for Gary Coleman," the statement reads. "Mr. Coleman was taken into custody and booked at the Utah County Jail without incident. The arrest warrant is unrelated to the original [call]." The statement gave no further detail.

The actor has since posted bail and is being released.

The Diff'rent Strokes star has faced plenty of drama recently.

Earlier this month, Coleman, 41, was briefly hospitalized after he fell ill in Los Angeles.

Coleman's wife, Shannon Price, was arrested last year after a domestic violence incident involving the actor. In 2008, the couple appeared on TV's Divorce Court to discuss their marital problems.

The actor also recently settled a lawsuit with a man he allegedly hit with his car at a Utah bowling alley in Sept. 2008.
