His main advice for Oscar season? Have fun with it.
"He said, 'It's a lot of fun, and enjoy it in that spirit. If you make it too much more than that, you'll probably go astray,' " Maggie said at the Oscar nominees' annual luncheon Monday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Maggie, 32, is up for best supporting actress this year for Crazy Heart. Jake, 29, a best supporting actor nominee for 2005's Brokeback Mountain, had pointers for his sister from the moment the nominations were announced on Feb. 2.
"My phone started ringing at 5 o'clock in the morning, and there's that first batch of phone calls from people who are up that early in the morning," she said. "I remember [Jake] looked at me and said, 'Your phone is going to be like that all day.' It was true."
She added: "I thought about going to sleep after that first 5 o'clock rush of calls, and he said, 'Don't go to sleep. Who knows when this will happen again. Stay up. Have some coffee.' "
Jake and Maggie are the ninth pair of siblings to receive Oscar nominations.
The others are: Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore; Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine; Vanessa Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave; Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty; Jane Fonda and Peter Fonda; Julia Roberts and Eric Roberts; Meg Tilly and Jennifer Tilly; and River Phoenix and Joaquin Phoenix.
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 7, and televised live on ABC beginning at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET
