He manages to combine the smoldering dark looks of Orlando Bloom and a young Johnny Depp, but with a distinct French twist – making it safe to say that Gaspard Ulliel should be as welcome on American shores as that other Gallic gift, the Statue of Liberty.

Featured in a New York Times spring fashion spread, Ulliel, 25, already boasts a César award (France's Oscar) as most promising newcomer – a distinction he won back when he was only 20.

Since then, some film roles with the likes of Isabelle Huppert, Audrey Tautou and Up in the Air's Vera Farmiga have followed, as has a Longchamp fashion campaign alongside Kate Moss and is the face of the new Chanel men's fragrance, which means a commercial directed by no less than Oscar winner Martin Scorsese. When to look for it? September.

And while Ulliel says, "I'm not really a model" – despite his mother's being a stylist and his father a former fashion designer – he insisted to The Times, "When I'm doing a photo shoot, I'm not playing a part. I'm just trying to be myself."
