"[George] was really messed up and punched a window of a car on the way over to her apartment [one] night," a former Virginia student, and friend of both Love and Huguely, tells New York's Daily News, recalling a recent incident when Huguely allegedly attacked Love – and did not remember the incident the very next day, which prompted their final breakup.
According to the friend, Huguely, 22, had been seen breaking bottles at a party before Love's death and the UVA student told others he was going to Love's apartment to get her back.
In addition to the fights, Huguely, says a friend who played lacrosse with him in summer leagues, was "obsessive" in that he constantly texted and called Love, so much so that her friends became worried about their relationship.
Huguely was arrested Monday after a roommate found the victim's body and face down in a pool of blood in her Charlottesville apartment. He told police he and Love, also 22 and a UVA lacrosse player, had just ended their relationship and that he had broken into her bedroom and shook her as her head repeatedly hit a wall.
Huguely's attorney, Francis Lawrence, said Tuesday that Love's death "was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome."
But Huguely's former summer league teammate said the 6'2" athlete sometimes became violent when he "partied really hard and when he was drunk or f----- up," the Daily News reported Friday. Two UVA students also told The New York Times they witnessed the couple in a physical altercation at a party this spring.
Huguely, who has withdrawn from the university, remains in custody at the Albermarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail until a June 10 bond hearing.
