Bryant Gumbel and Al Roker – old friends and Today show colleagues of Matt Lauer – say the TV anchor and his wife Annette seem fine, echoing the couple's own angry denials of a breakup.

"Nobody likes being under a microscope, even in the best of times. And so, it's not pleasant," Gumbel, the former Today show co-host, told PEOPLE on Monday. "I think they're doing fine."

Gumbel's wife Hilary also spoke in support of the Lauers: "They've made their rebuttal [to the accusations]," she said. "They've done what they needed to do. They want to be with their kids and just stay away from the glare."

Today weatherman Al Roker, attending the same American Ballet Theatre spring gala in New York, told PEOPLE he doesn't pay attention to rumors about the Lauers' personal life. "All I know is that he's great," Roker said. "I've seen him. They're fine. It's more about things on the outside. Everything on the inside is fine."

Last week, Lauer and his wife, married since 1998, blasted a report alleging that Lauer had moved out of the family's apartment. He told PEOPLE the story was "a work of fiction."

Gumbel, meanwhile, was treated recently for a malignant tumor in his lung, but told PEOPLE Monday that he was doing well. "I feel great, thank you very much for asking," he said.
