Tom Cruise has had decent dance moves since Risky Business. But he took things to a whole new level Sunday at the MTV Movie Awards – grinding his way through a hilarious routine in character as Tropic Thunder's comically crass film producer Les Grossman.
Cruise, 47, showed off the foul-mouthed, balding, hairy-armed Grossman's smooth, not-very-sexy moves in a dance-off with Jennifer Lopez on her song "Get Right." The routine brought raucous applause from the audience, as well as a beaming grin from wife Katie Holmes.
"It was a lot of fun – it was a blast!" Cruise told PEOPLE in the press room afterward. "You know, I can dance a bit, and we rehearsed. And my wife's a dancer, so I like dancing!"
Cruise revealed that he'd quietly been training with So You Think You Can Dance's Tyce Diorio – the same choreographer who helped Holmes, 31, with her well-received Judy Garland routine on the Fox show last year.
"She loved it," Cruise said of Holmes's reaction to his Grossman dance. "She was there [in rehearsal] while we were working on it."
