Glenn Beck couldn't help himself from cracking a few jokes at a recent convention – even if it was at his (and his health's) expense.

After having trouble focusing his eyes a few weeks ago, the conservative talk show host says he went to a doctor, who informed him that he has macular dystrophy.

"Is that that Jerry Lewis thing?" Beck, 46, quipped to a crowd of 6,000 fans Saturday during his "American Revival" event in Salt Lake City, referring to the comedian's famous telethons to raise money for muscular dystrophy.

The doctor told the Fox News Channel host that the eye disorder could cause him to go blind in one year – or it might not.

"I said, 'Did you just charge me a thousand dollars for knowing what I already knew my whole life?' " he recalls. "I knew that at 3 [years old]! You might go blind someday. You might not."

Jokes aside, a teary-eyed Beck says he's accepted the diagnosis and even calls it "the greatest blessing."

"Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They've been yours the whole time, anyway," he said. "Thank you for letting me see as far as I have."
