On TV's big awards night (Aug. 29 on NBC), the winners should be:

COMEDY

MODERN FAMILY

The trophy stands a strong chance of going to FOX's Glee, but this ABC series is as close to flawless as sitcoms come. The ensemble is funny a dozen different ways. I love it to pieces.

THE SURE BET

JOHN LITHGOW

He's a shoo-in for guest actor in a drama. As the increasingly unhinged serial killer on Showtime's Dexter, Lithgow (right, with Brando Eaton) gave the best performance-by anyone-last year.

VARIETY

THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN

Because he'd be honored for the plum NBC job that's no longer his, and to which he brought his fine silliness.

DRAMA

THE GOOD WIFE

CBS' morally tangled legal series is the one prime-time drama that can claim to be as polished as anything on cable. And please let star Julianna Margulies win best actress.
