LIVING IN DENIAL
Just days before heading to jail, Lindsay Lohan
, 24, paced amid the piles of clothes and shoes in her West Hollywood home as her mother, Dina, and sister Ali, 16, spoke with criminal-defense attorney Stuart V. Goldberg. "Dina mostly talked about how awful [her ex] Michael Lohan is," says Goldberg. "She was fragmented; I had to keep her focused. [She and Lindsay] didn't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation. Ali was the one asking astute questions." Lindsay's business manager says she's "greatly disappointed" that Goldberg (who is not representing the actress) talked to the press. Still, after two jail terms, two alcohol-monitoring bracelets, four trips to rehab and one deeply damaged career, Lindsay is caught in a parent trap, say friends. Dina, 47, habitually downplays her daughter's problems ("It's blown out of proportion," she told Today
's Matt Lauer in a combative Aug. 13 interview). And her estranged father, Michael, 50, talks openly about Lindsay's drug use while drumming up publicity for himself. Michael's tactics "are not helping her," says one of Lindsay's business associates. But many sources say Dina's penchant for blaming the media and other people is just as damaging, and they fear family dysfunction may lead Lindsay back to partying once she leaves court-ordered rehab at UCLA. "No matter what happens, Dina plays up that victim thing and takes away any responsibility Lindsay needs to feel," says a Lohan insider. Lately Dina is pointing a finger at L.A. judge Marsha Revel, who sent Lindsay away for violating her DUI probation. "She went overboard," Dina told Today
. A source close to Lindsay says Dina knows her daughter has a problem but is "afraid of Lindsay cutting her off: not financially-there's not much coming in now-but the relationship." When Lindsay checks out of UCLA, Dina says she'll head home to New York. But Lindsay's future is in her own hands. As one source who has worked with her notes, "You can't blame parents for everything-or forever."
MICHAEL DOUGLAS' HEALTH SCARE
Just weeks before the sequel to his film Wall Street
is scheduled to premiere, Oscar-winner Douglas, 65, disclosed that he has a tumor in his throat. Despite the news, he is said to be "very optimistic." Douglas, who has smoked cigarettes and cigars-which can be a contributing factor in developing these tumors-will undergo eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. According to his rep, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
DOOGIE'S A DADDY!
Four years after revealing he is gay-and in a relationship with actor David Burtka, 35-Neil Patrick Harris
, 37, made another big announcement: They're going to be fathers. "David and I are expecting twins," he tweeted Aug. 14. "We're super excited/nervous/thrilled." The babies, reportedly a boy and a girl, are due in October.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MADONNA
The Material Girl toasted her birthday a few days early, on Aug. 13, at London's swanky Shoreditch House with beau Jesus Luz and daughter Lourdes by her side. "She celebrated with the people she loves," a source tells Scoop.

A week after being rushed to a North Carolina hospital Aug. 9 for overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid, former American Idol
winner Fantasia Barrino was back home with, according to a source, a camera crew filming her VH1 show Fantasia for Real
. Barrino, says her rep, took the pills after being named in divorce papers filed by Paula Cook, the wife of Antwaun Cook, the man Barrino has been having an affair with. While she's well enough now to promote a new album, Barrino is not in the clear: Paula's attorney says she's considering legal action in a state where jilted spouses can sue over an affair.
