Snooki vs. Snooky: the Cartoon That’s Cat-Blocking the Jersey Shore Star’s Trademark

Before there was Snooki, your favorite pickle-loving, one-piece-rocking Jersey girl, there was Snooky: an orange-colored, nautical cat, who is the subject of a 2003 children's book.

And since Adventures of Snooky: Under the Sea is a trademarked book, Jersey Shore's Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi can't call dibs on the nickname. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied her request to trademark "Snooki" for use in print because of a "likelihood of confusion" with the children's book, reports New York Magazine.

Hopefully Snooki isn't bitter: She may even have more in common with the feline friend than a nickname. For instance:

1. They Both Put the "T" in "GTL"
You can't have "GTL" without a tan, and the two share the same orange glow.

2. They Both Can Go a Bit Overboard
When Snooki was arrested for disorderly conduct after a day of boozing by the beach, she said that she might have been "overdoing it a little too much". And Snooky can (sort of) relate: He, too, found himself going a little overboard – that is, when he ended up under the sea in search of his feline family.

3. They Both Know the Value of Friendship
The publisher's summary of Snooky's adventures sounds familiar: "Join Snooky as he makes many new friends searching for his family under the sea. Find out what happens when Snooky's new friends run into danger. Can he help save them? Will Snooky ever find his lost family?" It's all about the power of the posse, and they both have their friends' backs. After all, who would Snooki be without her main guidettes and juiceheads? – Alison Schwartz
