Real Housewives: Teresa’s Take on Sending the Right (or Wrong) Message
04/30/2010 AT 12:00 AM EDT
This week was all about communication. We saw how blogging has changed the way news is delivered and how the right messenger matters.
First, we had Bethenny’s pregnancy news leaked to the world by Perez Hilton before she had told anyone. The other Housewives didn’t know. No one knew. It is creepy that Perez found out. Wonder how? My guess is someone at Bethenny’s doctor called him. (And if that’s true, shame on them!)
One thing they didn’t show was that Bethenny did immediately deny Perez’s story. I remember because it was back in October and I had just had my baby Audriana in September. Perez reported that Bethenny was pregnant, and Bethenny denied it by saying she was pregnant but with nine of Perez’s blue-haired babies. I can see why Bethenny panicked, and I was surprised when she announced she was pregnant the very next day. But I guess there was no putting that cat back in the bag.
Bethenny had to call her fiancé Jason right away to tell him the news had been leaked and he was not happy. I like Jason and I liked that he got a little angry about it. It shows that he’s real and that he’s a man, not just some puppet or actor. I did feel bad for him too, because he didn’t sign up for this. I mean, yes, he knew who he was dating and sleeping with and impregnating and marrying… but still, even though you think you know what you signed up for having your life on television, you never really know until it’s happening to you.
Jill vs. Bethenny came into play again immediately because the press contacted Jill for a statement. Everyone last fall thought they were still best friends, so it’s only natural the press would call Jill, especially since Bethenny was denying it. But Jill sent Bethenny an e-mail … - again all this impersonal but life changing communication! … - and told her to keep her pregnancy quiet. That pissed off Bethenny, who suggested that the next time Alex sees Jill, “if she felt like it” and “it was the right time,” Alex could tell Jill that Bethenny was “done.”
I had to go back and watch the episode again just to see exactly how strongly Bethenny encouraged Alex to deliver “the message” because boy did Alex deliver it!
At Ramona's party that night, Alex gathered everyone together, got them all worked up into a frenzy about “the message” she had to deliver, kept them waiting, actually broke out in hives herself and then finally told Jill in front of everyone that Bethenny “was done” and that Bethenny “didn’t want to see Jill ever again or talk to her.”
To be fair, I don’t think that’s what Bethenny had in mind. But for some reason Alex stormed ahead. I’m confused because Alex is usually very put-together. Even if Bethenny had begged her to deliver this message, Alex is smart enough to say no. Or to deliver it in private. I could see Alex as the girl in third grade who delivered the popular girls’s messages just so they would talk to her. But she’s not in third grade anymore. And she didn’t appear drunk. What in the world was she thinking? She might as well have written out a note: “Bethenny does not want to talk to you ever again. Do you want to talk to her? Circle yes or no.”
Next week is a big week for me. The Real Housewives of New Jersey is back on Monday, May 3 and my healthy cookbook Skinny Italian comes out Tuesday, May 4.
I’m going to be in and around New York and seeing the New York Housewives all week. If anyone tries to deliver “a message” to me, they better hope there aren’t any tables nearby. Just kidding!
