"When they picked me for the part, I thought they were mistaken," he tells Entertainment Tonight for an interview to air Tuesday. "I thought I was going to be swiftly recast and fired and deported back to Canada!"
In the audition, he jokes, he chose a rather unusual instrument on which to demonstrate his musical talent.
"Originally I played the Tupperware drums to show my musical abilities, but I had to ultimately sing for the final audition, so I had to figure out how to do that very last minute," says Monteith, 27. "I never did sing growing up, so it's a change for me. I sang in the car, in the shower, but never for anyone. That's scary."
Now that Montheith's more comfortable belting out show tunes on Glee, he doesn't want to stop there.
