Betty White, still riding her wave of white-hot popularity, is joining the cast of the upcoming TV Land comedy Hot in Cleveland, her first starring role in a sitcom since Ladies Man went off the air in 2001.
Best known for her seven seasons on The Golden Girls, White will play Elka Ostrovsky, the property caretaker of the home that Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick rent after their plane makes an emergency landing in Cleveland and they decide to stay.
White, 88, has guest-starred on dozens of shows over the years. Her two regular TV roles in the past decade were on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful and the prime-time drama Boston Legal. She's been feeling a whole lot of love from audiences since her Snickers ad ran during the Super Bowl, and is set to host Saturday Night Live on May 8 after more than 500,000 fans lobbied on Facebook for her to get the gig. She's also guest starring on ABC's The Middle.
TV Land President Larry W. Jones said viewers can expect to see White's "amazing sense of timing and fantastic comedy genius" in her role as Elka on the network's very first foray into scripted entertainment. --Tim Nudd
