Kelly Osbourne, Mya and Donny Osmond All Shine in Dancing With the Stars Final Performances
Three couples hoofed it out for the season nine Dancing finale Monday night and, much like in season eight, the competition had something for everyone. Donny Osmond, Mya and Kelly Osbourne prepared three dances each for the last performance show of the year.
Kelly and partner Louis van Amstel started off the evening with a delicious tango that oozed intensity. All three judges praised the reality star for her marked improvement from the beginning of the season, with Len Goodman saying, "You are the revelation of this season." She and Louis were rewarded with 26 points.
Next up were Mya and Dmitry Chaplin with a paso doble so passionate that judge Bruno Toniolio couldn't sit still in his seat during the performance. "The power of Mya unleashed for all to admire," Bruno purred. Carrie Ann Inaba called it dynamic and hot while Len said it was one of the show's best performances ever. All of the praise translated into a perfect score of 30, the couple's second perfect score of the season.
Donny and Kym Johnson cha-cha'd like there was no tomorrow. The crowd loved it and so did the judges, with Bruno commending the veteran performer for being "a credit to the profession." They landed 27 points.
During the second portion of the show, the couples danced in the megamix challenge. They all danced the same choreography to the same music at the same time, and the judges scored them based on first, second and third place. Mya and Dmitry landed first with another perfect score of 30. Donny and Kym received second place honors and 28 points, and Kelly and Louis were third with 26 points.
Last, but certainly not least was the much-anticipated freestyle round. Kelly and Louis started things off with a spirited disco-inspired routine that, despite an obvious stumble, had the crowd on their feet during and after the performance. All three judges were unanimous in their praise, and gave the duo a decent score of 24.
After two perfect scores in a row, the crowd and the judges had high expectations for Mya and Dmitry's freestyle. But the routine, while crisp and clean, was "not outstanding to me," said Carrie Ann. Bruno said what everyone in the audience was feeling: "I was expecting something a little bit more spectacular." All that, and they still received a score of 27.
Last up were Donny and Kym, whose Broadway-inspired routine was well-paced and fun. Bruno called Donny "Mr. Show Business" and Carrie Ann personally inducted him into the DWTS freestyle Hall of Fame, joining the legendary dances of Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey from season two, and last year's Jabberwocky routine by Mark Ballas and Shawn Johnson. It was a perfect ending to a great night of dancing for Donny, who eyes welled with tears when he and Kym landed a perfect score of 30. –Monica Rizzo
