Jon & Kate Plus 8: Kate Fires a Gun, Jon Dresses In Drag
"To be honest, I didn't even know what Wyoming was like," Kate said as the episode opened with their arrival at a cattle ranch. Their first stop was a chicken coop, where the boys fed a grasshopper to the chickens. "Something's just telling me I shouldn't do this," she said.
"This is really not high heel country," Bob told Kate.
It wasn't long, however, until she started the "transformation from heels to boots," and showed off a new pink cowboy hat. After taking a spin on ATVs, learning to ride a horse named Banjo, shooting a variety of guns at a firing range and taking her boys on a long hike to a lions' den, Kate's transformation was complete.
"Over the days as I turned into a cowgirl, the boys turned into cowboys ... not only that, they grew up ... right before my eyes," she said. "I am so absolutely honored and privileged to have done that trip with them, but to me it was equally amazing that we managed to survive the trip completely, 100 percent paparazzi-free. It was truly, truly life-changing."
While Kate bonded with the boys, Jon was home doing the same with his daughters. The first order of business was a scavenger hunt in their yard. With Jon, Mady and Cara as team captains, the girls searched for four-leaf clovers, ladybugs, frogs and other items for an hour before Jon declared the competition a tie between Mady and Cara's team. The prize? "If you won you got to choose your favorite ice cream or dessert or whatever you wanted," Jon said.
Cut to the dentist's office, where the little girls got a check-up while Mady and Cara stayed home with a sitter. "They thought it was really cool to see their own teeth," Jon said, "but they also got to see where their cavities were ... and it was kind of hilarious because Leah had two cavities and Lex had one and Lex said that was unfair."
After rigging up telephones with tin cans and string between their playhouses in the yard, the twins wanted to perform a concert. That meant that the little girls got dressed up in their "rock star" clothes -- hats, scarves, sunglasses and dresses -- and convinced their reluctant dad to do the same.
"He was wearing a pink dress and a girl hat and his belly was fat," the little ones explained. "Daddy was a mommy. He had a baby."
Jon said he dressed in drag for his girls and that he loved being home with them, although he also liked living in New York, where he has moved into his own place since he and Kate decided to split.
"I'm starting to get the custody schedule down," Jon said. "The kids are starting to understand it more and what's going on and how Mommy and Daddy are working things out. We'll always be there for them, just not at the same time."
