In the opening scene of Monday's episode of The City, Jay talks to Adam about heading out on the road with his band Tamarama. The only problem? Whitney doesn't know he's leaving. "It's either you're in or you're out -- it's either leave a single man or you leave with somebody that sticks by your side," Adam advised. "Do not wait to tell her."
Jay sprung the news on a shocked Whitney over dinner at Felix Restaurant in Soho, informing her that -- oh, by the way! -- he was taking off in five days and -- oh, yeah! -- he doesn't know how long the tour will last.
When she asked when he found out the news, Jay revealed he'd known since before their Miami vacation but didn't want to ruin the trip. But rather than apologize for waiting to tell her, Jay seemed to project his own guilt onto her -- and said that her angry reaction is exactly why he didn't want to tell her. Disgusted, Whitney told him to find another place to stay for the night. "Maybe you should call Danielle," she snapped. Still reeling from Jay's bombshell, Whitney vented to Erin the next day at her apartment. "I’ve given him so much, I’ve opened up my life to him,” she said. “And he doesn’t even have the decency to tell me, like, such a big thing in his life.” A saddened Whit added, "I'm drowning in this. I just feel like everything is crashing down around me."
Trying to sort out her feelings about the Jay situation, Whitney tried to focus at DVF, where she and Olivia were tasked with presenting the new handbag collection for their global communications meeting before Fashion Week. A confident Olivia told her not to worry about it -- but when it came time for their presentation, Whitney impressed the DVF crew while a visibly nervous Olivia tripped over her words as everyone around her cringed.
But Whitney's triumph at work was soon overshadowed by her first meeting with Jay since walking out on him at the restaurant. Jay admitted that he felt like he was constantly doing something wrong in her eyes. "Why should I feel like that in my relationship?" he asked. As their argument escalated, Whitney shot back, "I don't want to be in a relationship with someone that thinks I'm a burden."
Jay then told her he needed to focus on the tour and that though she means the world to him, maybe the timing was wrong for their relationship. "Basically, I just don't mean enough to you to make it work at this point," a wounded Whitney responded.
And with both Whit and Jay wiping tears from their eyes (watch a clip), Jay told her, "I may as well tell you now than let it dissolve and disintegrate over time while I'm away and you're here." Jay then left, leaving a heartbroken Whitney staring out the window. -- Serena Kappes
