After the battle of the Davids -- Cook and Archuleta -- on last season of American Idol, isn’t it time for the women to rise to the top again? Not yet, says Idol judge Simon Cowell.
“It will be a boy this year,” Cowell told PEOPLE at the Elton John Aids Foundation Oscar party on Sunday night. Fellow judge Randy Jackson agrees. “I think it’s a dude, too. He’s Cowell copying me. Tell him to stop it!” says Jackson.
A little sniping between judges is nothing new and neither is each season's crop of Idol scandals (including the recent disqualification of contestant Joanna Pacitti, whose previous record deals and personal relationship with executives related to the show drew the ire of fans)-- much to Cowell's glee. “I like scandals,” he says. “It’s not American Idol without a scandal. In fact I hope we have some more, I really do."
Another thing the sharp-tongued judge likes about this season? The new format, which guarantees only three of the 12 singers from each group will make it through each round of the semifinals. “The fact that we change these middle rounds makes it less monotonous,” says Cowell, adding, “It’s a more interesting group of than last year, a bit more personality, different types of singers.”
Jackson’s take on the season? “We’re off to an amazing start, a record year, unbelievable talent. I think it’s going to be hot.” --Jenny Sundel
