Flying Solo The residents picked Yang (Sandra Oh) to do the first solo surgery, but she was out of the running after the intern chop shop, so the chief penalized her by forcing her to choose her replacement on a leg amputation in a bone cancer patient. She was also paired with visiting doc Dixon (Mary McDonnell) (the heart surgeon with Asperger's Syndrome) for the day and the chief warned, "Make sure this hospital impresses her. I want her as my next head of cardio. If she's not, I'll know who to blame."
When Yang finally tracked down Dixon, she had to explain about the solo surgery and her impending decision. Dixon just grunted. The residents hovered around Yang, trying to bribe and brown nose her throughout the day. But Mer (Ellen Pompeo) took the direct approach. "You know I deserve this," she told her. "You know I'm the most qualified but I don't want it to be a big awkward thing so you do what you have to do."
Dixon's speech, in reaction to a brain-dead teen and her parents stalling over the organ donation, actually helped Yang decide. "Leave feelings out of the science, the decision-making because are dying as we speak," she said. Yang chose Karev (Justin Chambers) because "he made the best case" and Mer felt snubbed, thinking Yang was still mad, which she was, but that wasn't why she made the choice. "Unlike you I can separate my personal life from my job. You made it personal," Yang snapped before darting off. Hunt (Kevin McKidd) found her tearing up in the hall took her to a dark room where she could make like Marilyn Monroe over a vent. It cheered her up enough for a serious makeout session (watch a clip).
Love Triangle Deceased Denny followed Izzie (Katherine Heigl) like a puppy and got miffed when Alex kissed her. Her off behavior was beginning to be noticed by the others and it started to affect her job. She forgot to staff and open the clinic, which she hadn't shown up to in a week. Later, she ditched George (T.R. Knight) to go have more vision sex. George tried to convince Alex that something was wrong, but he responded negatively. "Don't ever talk to me about Izzie again."
After getting the good news, Alex wanted to celebrate and found Izzie sleeping in the break room and launched into a speech: "I love you. I just got the solo surgery and the first thing I did was look for you and you weren't there. You're never there anymore. I think it might be because you love me too and you're scared of that 'cause I screwed it up last time and Denny died." She tried to stop him, but he continued, "I get that you're scared but you're not going to have to feel like that again 'cause I'm not going to die and cheat on you."
Say Hello to My Little Friend The interns were still persona non grata with the residents and one of them suggested getting some as a cure. Saying that she'd rather learn stuff, Lexie (Chyler Leigh) told the sexy plan to McSteamy (Eric Dane) responded awkwardly. "Why are you talking about sex to me? It's inappropriate," he stammered. He relented, letting her be on cappuccino duty while Bailey helped him on a cutting-edge surgery. He kept his distance, but after Sadie planted the seed in Lexie's head, pointing out that he was always checking her out, she made her move and showed up at his place, stripping and begging him to teach her until he broke his promise to Der.
Sexy Sadie Sadie flirted with Callie (Sara Ramirez) over slides of broken bones, which for Callie is akin to men and stomachs. She excused herself awkwardly and ran into a chair on her way to find Sloane to gossip about her encounter. He ran down a checklist and Callie concluded, "I made it up because I'm lonely and depressed and desperate for attention from the crazy hot intern." Sloane instructed her (but was really talking to himself), "The hot ones cause trouble and distract you from realizing your true potential. Take all that pent up sexual energy that you waste thinking about young, naked, available interns and put it back into your genius."
Tell us: Did Yang make the right decision? Does Mer have a right to be upset? Was Callie reading too much into Sadie's advances? How about Slexiepedia hookup? And do you like Dr. Dixon?
