With Desperate Housewives, Sex and the City and Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 on his résumé, Kyle MacLachlan has become quite accustomed to dealing with women and their issues. “I joke that the only group that I missed was the Golden Girls." MacLachlan said in a phone interview from his home in L.A. "It’s apparently my destiny to be surrounded by four leading ladies, which is not a bad destiny." Based on his history, it's no surprise this female-friendly actor has chosen ovarian cancer as his pet cause. MacLachlan has teamed up with the Callaway Golf Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation on a PSA about the disease, which will begin airing on TV this week (watch it here). He talked to PEOPLE about his involvement with the cause and spills some interesting tidbits about next season's Desperate Housewives.– Carrie Bell

Why did you choose to be involved with the Callaway Golf Foundation Women's Cancer Initiative? Ovarian cancer runs in my family. My mom was diagnosed with it in the early ‘80s and she passed away from it in 1986. I was devastated by it and wanted to do something to help, but at the time I wasn’t sure what I could do. This was the first time that I was like, ‘Wow this is something that I can really get behind and get involved with and help keep others hopefully from going through the things that I had to with my mother.’ What is the goal of the PSA?It is about making stop to ask themselves, ‘Hey, maybe this is something I should think about. Maybe it runs in my family. Am getting to a certain age and I need to be more aware of my body?’ Ovarian cancer is labeled a silent killer because it is so difficult to detect.

It is interesting that the foundation is also trying to increase men’s awareness of this disease.Every man has a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, friends. My wife is the one who has to remind me to put on sunscreen before I go to the golf course or she’ll say, ‘When was your last physical or dentist appointment?’ So I think by having Callaway involved and me involved it might encourage husbands to return the favor to the women in their lives. Focusing on something that affects women is important and bold. It has that ‘we’re all in this together’ feeling. We have to take care of the women in our lives.

With Desperate Housewives back from hiatus and a 1-month-old at home, we’re guessing you haven’t been practicing your golf swing much.I haven’t gotten out much in the last few months because we had a baby and my life has pretty much been focused on the house and my family’s needs. Not much time to play when there are diapers to change. And we’ve been up and running at Desperate Housewives since the 7th of July. That’s going really well. It is so nice to work with you like to hang out with. It is such a good welcoming cast and crew over there.

The season premiere is less than a month away. Can you hint at what’s going to happen next on Wisteria Lane? There are significant changes that have happened with each of the couples because of the five-year jump. They aren’t in the same places as they were in the year we left them in the finale. The cliffhanger ending gave you a slice of life for everyone in the future but there are so many more changes and surprises. There are a few new characters. It is going to be a really fun season. Action-packed and drama-packed as always.

Given you and Bree weren't exactly a happy couple at the end of last season, were you worried you might not have a job with the five-year jump forward? They knew I was coming back but they weren’t sure how or if I would win Bree back or something else would happen to Orson. But I can tell the fans that they have allowed me to return to be with Bree but I have had to make a lot of sacrifices in the last five years to be with her. Those come out in the first episode or two and they are fun. They explain why we are back together, but there is also still some tension. They love to keep the couples on the edge of breakup. They are always throwing new challenges at these characters.
