So the good news first: Nigel Lythgoe announced on last night’s results show, So You Think You Can Dance has been picked up for a 5th season on Fox. And even better news for the last dancer standing: the lucky winner of this year’s competition will not only receive $250,000 in prize money, but a guaranteed feature role in guest judge and Hairspray director Adam Shankman's next project.
Then came the bad news: two of the remaining six dancers had to go home. For the girls, it came down to Chelsie Hightower and Courtney Galiano, before Chelsie learned she would be saying goodbye for good. It didn’t get any easier for the guys as favorites Mark Kanemura and Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss (who was in the bottom last week), waited for Cat Deeley to read their results. In something of an upset, show favorite Mark learned he would be leaving. (Watch the clip.) “The thing about this six is that anyone of them could have won,” Shankman told PEOPLE, adding that on the boy’s side, “I think that honestly, Twitch’s solos have probably been stronger for the season, and that may have put him over.”
Chelsie, the Latin ballroom dancer who beat the odds just to get to the show, dropped her normally tough exterior as tears rolled down her face. She told the audience: “I’m not crying ‘cause I’m sad. I’m just really overwhelmed right now. I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity and thank you so much judges… ” before she ran out of breath.
Mark, who kicked it into high gear once in the Top 10, said “I’m so appreciative that were able to hear my voice and support me, and keep me in this competition so I could learn and grow… it’s been amazing! Amazing!” --Jed Dreben
