News that Doherty has joined the new 90210 cast, "is amazing," says Spelling, who also plans on appearing on the CW spin-off.
"That's probably the best news the fans could ever get," she told PEOPLE at Saturday's Much Love Animal Rescue's Bow Wow Wow event. And despite Doherty's onset reputation, Spelling says, "All the girls on the show will be psyched!"
Spelling is pretty psyched herself -- about her own growing family. Daughter Stella, who was born June 6, "is doing great," she says. "She's growing fast. It seemed like only yesterday she was born and now she has big chubby cheeks and she's starting to focus everywhere."
And big brother Liam, 1, is stepping right into his new role as big brother, Spelling says.
"He's doing well, the little man," says Spelling. "He's at that age where it's hard for him to understand. He's not old enough to explain to him what's happening but he's old enough that he knows something's happening. So, at first he was unsure, but now he gives her kisses goodnight.
