When Brooke White started out on American Idol in August, hubby David Ray showed his support by vowing not to cut his curly black hair until her final bow. White, who once attended beauty school, is the only person to cut his hair since the couple met six years ago. Ray, an accountant, almost broke down and begged Brooke to get out her sheers for a trim before tax day in April. But White decided against it in case his growing locks were the source of her good luck. "I said, 'What if you cut it and then I get axed the next round?' So then he got serious about it," White says.

After nine months, Brooke, who was eliminated from Idol on April 30, finally found the time last week to cut his hair at their home in Van Nuys, Calif. "I needed a lawnmower," she laughs. "Dave has a ton of hair."

Dave wanted a conservative cut so for inspiration, White checked out pictures of actor Adrian Grenier and singer John Mayer. "I like Dave's hair long so it breaks my heart to cut if off," she told PEOPLE. White took an hour and 15 minutes to finish the job, lopping off chunks as long as seven inches. "The pile on the floor was kind of scary."

And how would the finicky Idol judges score at the chair? "Randy would say, 'I don't know if it's your best haircut but it's a pretty good haircut,'" Brooke jokes. "Paula would say 'It's wonderful,' and Simon would be 50-50," she says, adding that Cowell's hair could use a dose of pomade.

But the most important critic had no complaints. "I like it," says Ray. I'm looking forward to wearing a hat again." Watch for Ray to debut his stylish new 'do at Wednesday's Idol finale on FOX (8 p.m. ET). --Lorenzo BenetFrank Micelotta/Getty
