Top Model’s Marvita: My Grandma Was Disappointed
03/20/2008 AT 12:00 AM EDT
The 23-year-old San Francisco native was sent home Wednesday night when Tyra Banks and her team of judges sensed she wasn't as invested in the competition as the other girls. But Marvita wants to set the record straight -- and talked to PEOPLE about how it went down, what she's up to now and what her No. 1 fan (Grandma!) had to say about it all. --Archana Ram
Did you watch the episode Wednesday?I wasn't very happy with it because it made it seem like I had really given up on the competition. And I really don't feel like I did.
How do you think you performed at the photo shoot?Maybe I didn't give my 100 percent like I did on all the other photo shoots. Tyra had told me to soften up my face and give different expressions the episode before. Usually I would say, "Tyra said do it this way, so I'm going to do it this way", instead of doing what I would normally. There was some confusion on my part. I don't think I should've been thinking about what the panel was going to say to me.
What do you make of Tyra saying you didn't want to be in the competition? She may have thought that because of that one photo shoot, but I feel that maybe if I had been able to stay, I would've done better because that was one -- one! -- mess up. But I don't think the photo was bad. I thought it looked pretty good. I can't change anything that I did and I can't say that I would want to. Whatever happened happened. I felt like I tried my best and did what I could. That was just a bad day for me.
You auditioned for cycle 9 and didn't make the cut, but you came back for cycle 10. Do you think you'll come back again?I can't come back to the show. I already came back! No, that's not going to happen.
What are you doing now?I'm working as a cashier in San Francisco. I see modeling in the future. I want to do everything I possibly can. I love New York! It's a goal for me to move out there. I've also been helping out with my grandma who has cancer. I go to the nursing home and watch Top Model with her and all her friends from the nursing home. She's like, "That's my granddaughter!" Now they want a big poster of me with my signature to put up at the nursing home. But she was disappointed with me last night. She said, "I don't know what happened with you! Why didn't you try? You were doing so good!" I was like, "I know, Grams."
