Idol: Hello, David Cook!

03/05/2008 at 12:00 AM EST

The men sure showed their strength Tuesday when at least four of the eight remaining male contestants -- David Archuleta, David Hernandez, Michael Johns and Jason Castro -- gave charming and memorable '80s night performances and received high marks from the judges as the first half of American Idol's sweet 16 took the stage.

But only David Cook, who played the electric guitar while he sang, stepped into the spotlight to give an exciting emo-rock version of Lionel Richie's "Hello."

Judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul told him that if he released the song today, it would be a hit.

Cowell told only two contestants -- Archuleta and Hernandez -- that he would definitely see them next week, but told Cook he "really, really" hoped he'd be one of the top 12 to perform (Tuesday March 11, 8 p.m. EST) on the (new and bigger) Idol stage.

Tell us: Who had the best performance of the night? Will David Cook make it into the top 12?FOX
