Beth Holloway Confronts Joran van der Sloot in Prison

09/17/2010 at 08:35 AM EDT

Beth Holloway, mother of missing American teen Natalee Holloway, broke into a Peru prison to confront Joran van der Sloot – the man suspected in the case of the younger Holloway's 2005 disappearance – Beth Holloway's attorney, John Kelly, confirmed on Friday's Today show.

Kelly said it was Beth Holloway's first face-to-face meeting with van der Sloot since the night her daughter went missing. Natalee Holloway was last seen alive with the young Dutchman on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba. He has publicly said several times that he killed Holloway before retracting his confessions.

According to CNN, Peru's 24 Horas TV program reported that Holloway visited van der Sloot for only five minutes in his Castro Castro prison cell, where the 22-year-old is awaiting trial on a murder charge in the death of Peruvian student Stephany Flores. Van der Sloot then canceled the meeting because his lawyer was not present.

The program also reported that the meeting was civil, with both parties speaking very little but treating each other well. Van der Sloot's lawyer, Maximo Altez, told NBC News that Holloway told the young man she had "no hate in her soul" for him.

Holloway reportedly entered the prison by accompanying Dutch journalist Peter de Vries, who was filming a documentary on van der Sloot. The journalist denied news reports that prison authorities had detained him and Holloway or that they had confiscated his camera equipment.

Besides the murder charge, van der Sloot also faces trial in Alabama for wire fraud and extortion over allegedly trying to extort more than $250,000 from Holloway's family in return for disclosing the location of her body.
