With two careers that keep them on the road, Carrie Underwood
and Mike Fisher haven't had much together time since their July 10 wedding
, but the singer says for her, marriage is a perfect fit.
"Mike's the missing piece to my puzzle – he's a few pieces," Underwood tells PEOPLE Country in its November issue. "He makes me a better person."
Though Underwood, 27, admits that winters in her hockey player husband's native Canada can be rough ("I can't do my cute heels in the winter!"), for now, the couple are content to shuttle between their Nashville and Ottawa homes.
"It's not like we have office jobs where you can transfer!" she says. "It's not a conventional marriage."
Underwood says the marriage is something for which she gives thanks, along with other blessings in her life, like her dog Ace – whom she "missed like crazy" while on her two-week Tahitian honeymoon with Fisher – her faith ("with God, the bad isn't as bad") and her family.
