It's a lesson Ben Stiller and wife Christine Taylor are passing down by to their kids: Even when life doesn't give you lemons, make lemonade.

The powerhouse comedic couple encourages their children, Ella, 8, and Quinlin, 5, to give back, which led their daughter to start her own lemonade stand.

"They raised $120 – I think a few parents stopped by and dropped twenties," Taylor, 39, told PEOPLE at recent New York fundraiser for Project A.L.S. "It was great, and it's important for their self-esteem too."

Stiller, 44, shares her sentiment, saying the couple tries to set a good example for their children because "they pick up the good things you do and the bad things you do."

"When you're lucky enough to have things in your life and you're brought up with that, it's hard for kids to know what it's like not to have that because that's just not their reality," says the Tropic Thunder star. "You just try to point it out and try to make them aware."

Also in the parent-child lesson plan: proper forms of expression. Says Stiller: "I'm always telling them, 'Don't say "like." ' Like, seriously, don't do it."
