Lavin, 33, has "crawled out of a deep hole," his mother, Barbara "Bobbi" Lavin, told Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Norm Clarke. "He is now walking, talking, eating on his own and is getting his sense of humor back."
Lavin, the host of MTV's Real World Road Rules Challenge, was injured while competing in a dirt qualifying round in the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas.
He suffered an orbital fracture on his eye and a fractured right wrist. He was later put into a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling, but doctors said his prognosis was good.
Lavin has just finished two weeks of rehabilitation, and his mother says he still has a long road ahead. He'll have to wear and eye patch occasionally and is assisted by his fiancée, Roxanne Siordia. Next up, Lavin will join a program for brain injuries at an outpatient facility in Las Vegas.
"He has some eye issues and balance issues, but as the swelling goes down, we hope they will go away," Barbara Lavin says, adding that there is good news: "He's starting to get his personality back."
When asked in a recent rehabilitation session to recall three historical events, Lavin named the September 11 terrorist attacks, Pearl Harbor and, says his mother, "Janet Jackson's boob," referring to the singer's wardrobe malfunction during the halftime show at the Super Bowl in 2004.
