The former talk show host and her beau of two years, Steven Fenton, got engaged in June, she reveals to PEOPLE exclusively.
Fenton, 40, asked Gibbons, 53, to marry him on the lawn of their new home in L.A. before they moved in. "He was on one knee and I was on Cloud 9!" Gibbons says. "I have a ring but we decided that I won't wear it until we have a private exchange of vows."
Gibbons began dating Fenton, who is President of the Beverly Hills Board of Education, after being set up on a blind date two years ago. "In the beginning, the age thing tripped me up for a minute," she says. "I believe in love and I always held onto the belief that I would find it again but I didn't think it would come in the form of Steven."
The two haven't set a date for their wedding. "We'll know when the time is right ... Steven knew he wasn't just marrying me, he was marrying into a family that included my kids," says Gibbons, who has three children from two previous marriages. "Our energy is the same and we connect through our desire to love our families and friends, serve our communities and make a difference."
Inspired by her mother's struggle with Alzheimer's disease, Gibbons formed the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, and on Tuesday launched a new initiative, Stand Together for AD, providing information and advice on care-giving and access to a caregiver support program.
"After seeing the two most important women in my life, my Mom and Grandmom, both die in slow motion, I know what an assault it is for families," Gibbons says. "It's so important to know your limits and to know when to reach out for help."
