The U.S. Congresswoman has been taken off a ventilator and is breathing on her own through a tracheotomy tube, CNN reports.
The University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., where Giffords is being treated after getting shot in the head a week ago, made the announcement on Saturday.
Surgeons also inserted a feeding tube so Giffords, 40, could get nutrients.
On Thursday, Giffords's doctors acknowledged "miracles" when it comes to her recovery after they said she was able to sit up, communicate with her hands and move her legs.
Another patient – James Tucker, 58 – who was injured during the shooting last Saturday, was released from the medical center Saturday.
