It's the downside of the Oscar nominations – the disappointment felt by those who were overlooked despite critically acclaimed performances.

This year is no different, with five actors and actresses in particular notably missing from the list of nominees – Andrew Garfield (The Social Network); Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine); Mila Kunis (Black Swan); Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right); and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter).

Interestingly, all five saw a costar (or in Wahlberg's case, three costars) earn a nomination: Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine); Natalie Portman (Black Swan); Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network); Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right); and Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo (all for The Fighter).

So, tell us who was most overlooked?
