"Thankfully, miraculously, Gabby survives," Kelly, an astronaut, said Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., where he gave the closing prayer following remarks by President Obama.
"Every day, she gets a little better," Kelly said of Giffords, 40, who was shot while meeting with constituents in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8. Doctors have told Kelly "that's a great sign, the slope of that curve is very important," he added.
Addressing a diverse group of religious leaders at the annual breakfast, Kelly, 46, said he hadn't been a big believer in faith until lately. But he now believes, as he recently told his wife, that perhaps "this event, horrible and tragic, was not merely random, that maybe something good can come from this."
Kelly also said the faith of others has been a godsend for him and his wife. "Please, please, please continue to keep Gabby in your prayers and thoughts," he said.
