As Charlie Sheen continues to rage against his Two and a Half Men bosses, friends say the actor's five children have been largely shielded from the circus.
Sheen's 2-year-old twins Bob and Max with estranged wife Brooke Mueller "have no idea what's going on," a family source close to Mueller tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. Likewise, Sheen's daughters Sam, 7, and Lola, 5 – with ex-wife Denise Richards – are "doing well," says a source. "They're continuing with their normal routine."
Despite his addiction struggles over the years and his increasingly erratic behavior in recent weeks, Sheen, 45, "loves all his kids," says one source close to the star, who also has a 26-year-old daughter, Cassandra, with ex-girlfriend Paula Speers.
Since being temporarily stripped of custody of his twins, the actor has vowed to fight to get them back.
As defiant – and rambling – as ever, Sheen text messaged PEOPLE in the midst of the latest drama and said, in part, "The winds are howling tonight. The gods are hungry. The beast is alive. And awake. And deadly."
