Matthew Morrison plays well with others.

The Glee star, who is preparing to release his debut solo album in May, will roll out a duet with Elton John on Tuesday – and PEOPLE has an early preview.

The track, available on Amazon.com Tuesday, is a mashup of two of John's classic songs, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and "Rocket Man."

The pair recorded the song in January. "It's great, really fantastic. He sings great on it," Morrison, 32, told Parade at the time.

And Morrison says he was nervous about asking John to sing on his record. "I was kind of stammering and stuttering," Morrison recalls in an interview with ET Canada. "I was like, 'I'm doing this album and I would really love you to be a part of it. And he was like, 'Yeah, sure.' I was like, 'That's it?' "

"Then, you know, it happened and it was awesome," Morrison says. "[It was] such a learning experience being in the studio with him."

As for the specific song choice, Morrison says, "He gave me free reign, and it took me three days to go through his whole collection because he’s got so many songs ... [But] it's a beautifully epic seven-minute song, and it's my favorite song on the album."

The duet is one of several on the new record, which is due out May 10. Other duet partners include Gwyneth Paltrow and 'N Sync member JC Chasez.

The album is a little less poppy than the Glee sound. "I want to stay a little bit away from Glee," Morrison told Ryan Seacrest in February, when he premiered the single "Summer Rain."
