A Miami-area teenage couple who disappeared
more than two weeks ago after their parents expressed concerns about their relationship have been found.
"At this time, it doesn't appear a crime has been committed," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta of the Miami-Dade Police tells PEOPLE. "It appears the girlfriend left with her boyfriend on her own free will."
Jackson Powell, 18, and Nicole Dones, 17, dubbed a modern-day "Romeo and Juliet" by a police detective, vanished on April 18 two days after attending their senior prom.
"They've been recovered, and I just dropped them off at home 15 minutes ago," private investigator David Gonzales, hired by Dones's family, tells PEOPLE. "I can't say anything more at this time."
Calls to the teens' parents weren't immediately returned.
Jackson and Nicole, who met in their junior year, had been getting pressure from their parents to slow down their relationship after both showed signs of neglecting their studies. Several weeks ago, the pair were caught skipping school together.
"We never forbid our daughter from seeing Jackson," Nicole's mother Margie Chavez previously told PEOPLE. "We just didn't want her to lose focus on school."
Last week, Jackson's dad Wayne told the Miami Herald
that he had wanted his son to "back off a little bit" from the relationship and focus on college.
Concerns were raised about Jackson's emotional health, since he'd lost his older brother in a car accident last year and had recently been in trouble with the law for an undisclosed reason.
