Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are both expected to attend, for different films. Jolie arrives Thursday (along with Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman) for Kung Fu Panda 2. Pitt is due next Monday for The Tree of Life. The couple are expected to walk the red carpet together for his premiere.
Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams joined Woody Allen for photos on Wednesday. They costar in Allen's new film, Midnight in Paris, which opens the festival.
Also turning heads on Wednesday were Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas, who arrived to show some footage from their Shrek prequel Puss in Boots, which comes out in November.
Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz are due to arrive at the festival later this week for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Other stars expected to show up include Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster.
Among the more highly anticipated films at the festival that will be hitting U.S. theaters soon are the following:
Midnight in Paris: Wilson, McAdams, Adrien Brody, Michael Sheen and Tom Hiddleston play Americans abroad in Allen's new comedy, featuring a small role for France's First Lady, Carla Bruni. It opens May 20 in the U.S.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Depp and Cruz continue the $2.7 billion franchise, this time with new director Rob Marshall succeeding Gore Verbinski. The adventures begin May 20 in the U.S. Kung Fu Panda 2: Black, Jolie and Hoffman are joined by the voices of Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh in this animated sequel, directed by Jennifer Yuh, which opens May 26 in the U.S.
The Tree of Life: Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain star in this 1950s domestic drama that veers into sci-fi. It's only the fifth feature directed by Terrence Malick in 40 years of filmmaking. Tree opens May 27 in the U.S.
The Beaver: Mel Gibson and Foster star in this odd tale of a clinically depressed man who begins to speak through a hand puppet. Foster also directed. The movie has already opened in the U.S., but gets a wider release on May 20.
