Your debut, 19, was such a smash-were you afraid of the sophomore slump when you recorded 21?
Yes. I didn't know what to write. Luckily I broke up with my ex-that's good material. But I was insecure because it's so personal, you know?
How did you survive the breakup?
I locked myself in my house for nine months, drank four bottles of wine a night and listened to Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."
Who's your ideal guy now?
I'd rather date an ugly, hilarious guy than Leonardo DiCaprio
. Humor keeps relationships together.
Would you prefer to settle down with a Brit over an American?
American men don't get my humor-it's very dry and sarcastic. Ideally I'd be with an English guy who lived in England because I hate flying. On a plane I'm convinced I'm going to die, so I call and text everyone I love.
How has your style changed?
I didn't have a stylist for the first [album], so it was a lot of comfort jumpers and leggings. Now I have a stylist who knows my figure and knows how I feel about my body.
How do you feel about it? Have you been pressured to diet?
I've never wanted to look like the models on magazine covers. I wasn't brought up like that. I hate when something is all visual and not about the music. I'm not one of those artists, so I don't have the pressure. But I still have hang-ups. I sometimes wake up and hate myself just like anyone else does, sometimes for my body, sometimes for a drunk text I sent. But even before I sold any records, I always stood up for myself!
