Maria Shriver has broken her silence and responded to the news that her estranged husband, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, fathered a child with a member of his household staff 10 years ago.
"This is a painful and heartbreaking time," said Shriver, 55. "As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal. I will have no further comment."
Tuesday's news about Schwarzenegger's indiscretion follows last week's announcement that Schwarzenegger and Shriver had separated after 25 years of marriage.
The couple have four children together, ages 13, 17, 19 and 21.
