On the first day of the Casey Anthony trial
, defense attorney Jose Baez dropped the bombshell that 2-year-old Caylee Anthony drowned in the family pool
and was discovered by her grandfather
, George Anthony.
"It's a common tragedy," Baez said during opening statements
As it turns out, the story is common to at least one of Anthony's fellow inmates in the Orange County Jail.
During a hearing on Tuesday morning, prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick told the court that Casey Anthony was in a cell next to an inmate named April who had a similar story.
According to Burdick, the state received a tip that April's young son had drowned in the family pool and that his body had been discovered by a grandfather. The one difference between April's story and the Anthony case: April immediately reported the drowning.
Upon hearing of April's story, Anthony shook her head and whispered to one of her attorneys. The jury had already left the courtroom and did not hear of the potential new witness.
But Anthony might not need to be concerned. The state has yet to establish that Anthony and April have ever spoken, although an investigation continues.
"At this time, we do not plan to call her to the stand," said Burdick. "We wanted to let the court know."
