Two months after his announcement to PEOPLE that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, country legend Glen Campbell has given his first TV interview – coming across as forgetful and strongly dependent upon his wife to fill in many of the answers.

"What was I saying?" Campbell, in the course of his conversation with ABC's Terry Moran for Tuesday's World News with Diane Sawyer, asked in the middle of answering a question about his career.

"I'm going to be right in the middle of a sentence, man – and it just goes, pew," he said.

With his wife of nearly 30 years, Kim Woollen, at his side in their house in Malibu, Campbell said of Alzehimer's, "I hadn't gotten it yet. In fact, I don't even know where it came from."

"Yes, you've been diagnosed with Alzheimer's," interjected Woollen.

"What? I haven't felt it yet," Campbell said with a laugh. "I've always been forgetful anyway. I'm only what, 78?"

"Seventy-five," said Woollen.

Woollen, pointing out that music is a natural memory aid that is helping Campbell from declining, went on to say: "I just take care of him, which is a big job. We'd been noticing short-term memory loss for quite some time. You know, he repeats himself. … He'll tell a joke, laugh at it and a few minutes later tell the same joke, laugh, and then we laugh at him because he's just enjoying it so much. You just make the best of each day and try not to worry about tomorrow."

"Definitely take care of what's today and tomorrow's going to have what it has," said Campbell. "There's a verse in the Bible that says, 'If the man findeth a good wife he's found a good thing,' and I found a good thing, or she found me."

To Woollen, he said, "Did you find me or did I find you?"

"I think we found each other," she replied.

"That's what we did," he said. "Amen."
