Actor Michael Showers, whose body was found
in the Mississippi River this week, died of drowning, according to the Orleans Parish coroner's office.
It was also revealed that Showers, 45, was battling depression and anxiety and had been diagnosed in March with multiple sclerosis, according to The Times-Picayune
There were no signs of trauma to his body, and authorities are awaiting results for toxicology tests for drugs and alcohol, said John Gagliano, the coroner’s office chief investigator.
Showers was known for a small role on the HBO drama Treme
, and had also appeared in AMC's Breaking Bad
and the film I Love You Phillip Morris
New details have also emerged about Showers's final movements. His girlfriend Melinda Carlos told police that when Showers left their home on Monday he said he was going to a gym to meet someone named Joe, whom authorities are trying to locate for questioning, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
Soon after, Carlos called Showers, who said he was going to a bar with Joe. Sometime during the evening, Carlos sent Showers a text message requesting that he be home at a "decent time," according to the report, and Showers later sent her a photo of himself and Joe. The last time Carlos was in contact with Showers was at 10:54 p.m. Police are continuing to search for Showers's car, a black four-door 2002 Infiniti G20.
The cast and crew of the HBO show have paid their respects to the actor, with show creator David Simon saying in a statement, "Michael Showers was a fine actor who contributed his talents to our drama in the warmest and most professional way."
