The comedy centers on a quirky, sweet and silly teacher named Jess Day, who moves in with three straight guys after she catches her boyfriend cheating.
In the pilot, which aired Tuesday, Jess convinces the guys – Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Coach (guest star Damon Wayans Jr.) – that she should move into their apartment by telling them she's friends with models.
After spending a week on the couch sobbing over Dirty Dancing, the guys attempt to resuscitate Jess's love life by taking her out to a bar in search of a rebound.
Fox hopes viewers will laugh at – and fall in love – with "adorkable" Jess, who flips her glasses around when she sees a cute guy and sings her own made-up theme songs. Deschanel plays the quirky girl best in between jokes, like when she's coaching Coach on how to talk to women.
The guys are both tolerant of their awkward new roommate and kind, like when they rescue Jess from being stood up by a date at a stuffy restaurant, singing the Dirty Dancing theme song, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," to cheer her up.
The show, which audiences may find either charming and funny or a bit forced, returns Tuesday (9 p.m. ET) to Fox, with the introduction of a new roommate for Jess.
