Buddy Valastro Proposes to His Wife – Again

09/26/2011 at 04:40 PM EDT

Talk about the perfect occasion for a kick-ass cake!

Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro is planning an over-the-top vow renewal ceremony with wife Lisa for their tenth anniversary on Oct. 14 – and the first step was a surprise proposal.

"I wanted to do something special and include our four kids in it," says Valastro, 34, father of Sofia, 8, Buddy Jr., 6, Marco, 4 and Carlo, 7 months, who filmed the surprise proposal for his hit TLC series, which returns Monday at 10 p.m. ET.

"The kids came to make cupcakes that spelled 'marry us' and when I brought her in, she looked down and saw it and she was so shocked," he says. "It was pretty cool. The kids were on their knees and I was too. My wife deserves it. She's such a good wife and mother."

What inspired Valastro to renew his vows?

"We got married in October 2001, less than a month away from Sept. 11 and as joyous an occasion as it was, everybody had a piece of their heart ripped out," Valastro says.

Lisa, 31, was also too scared to fly out on their planned Hawaiian honeymoon at the time, so Valastro says their vow renewal will take place somewhere tropical – and the cake will reflect the locale: "The cake is going to be a bit tropical with seashells and lace details."

And, yes, he’s making it himself.

"I was tempted to make a replica of my first wedding cake but that would be too easy," he says. "I'm a better baker now. It has to be to be special."
