What does Semi-Homemade Cooking star Sandra Lee whip up to surprise her boyfriend of five years, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo?
"I make him coffee brownies, and I undercook them by about 10 minutes so they're gooey – that's how he likes them," Lee told PEOPLE Friday night at Sweet, an all-dessert party she was hosting as part of the New York City Wine and Food Festival.
She might want to do a little more research the next time she springs a treat on him. At the event, which featured decadent creations from pastry chefs like Top Chef's Johnny Iuzzini, Cuomo revealed that his favorite dessert is … not brownies.
It's actually cheesecake, "New York style," specifies the Italian-American governor. "I like the Italian cheesecake, but it's not even comparable to the New York cheesecake. I hope I don't offend my heritage with that."
Not to mention his girlfriend. "Sandra makes a great cheesecake," he says. "She also makes a nice brownie, but I'm not a dark chocolate person."
One thing the couple agreed on was that all the dessert they sampled at the event ("the crème brulee donuts will knock your socks off," raved Lee) was being served up for a good cause. The proceeds benefit the Food Bank of New York City. "We sold 1200 tickets at $200, so $240,000 was raised in a three-hour period," says Lee, who has written about her own childhood in a family struggling with economic hardship.
Added Gov. Cuomo: "This economy is doing a lot of damage to people who are in need. And funding for hunger and homeless not-for-profits is of serious concern. When you can help people and have fun at it, it’s a good night."
