In the wake of Dan Wheldon's tragic death
during the Las Vegas Indy 300 race on Sunday, fellow driver Danica Patrick
is speaking out about the accident.
"There are no words for today. Myself and so many others are devastated," Patrick Tweeted
on Sunday. "I pray for Suzi and the kids that God will give them strength."
In an interview following the crash, Patrick, who did not yet know the fatal outcome of the accident, talked about her feelings prior to the race.
"I was really nervous coming into today," Patrick said on ABC, later adding, "I have nothing to lose, except I have everything to lose."
As a result of the 15-car crash, Wheldon's car flew over the top of another and caught part of a fence. The two-time Indianapolis 500
winner was airlifted to a hospital, where he later died.
"The first thing I said was, 'Wow' and then I said, 'I hope everybody's OK' because it was like a movie scene, which they try to make look as gnarly as possible," she said of the crash
. "It was debris everywhere, across the whole track. You could smell the smoke ⦠There was chunk of fire that we were driving around out there and then you just see cars scattered."
"I know we haven't heard about Dan and you don't want to be in that position. We shouldn't have to."
